1. Find an application for what you learned in class today.

Present an LED project to the class on Wednesday, September 10.

Your project can be a prototype or a finished work.

If you are bringing a prototype, also bring a drawing of your project plan and be prepared to present your idea to the class.

 

2. Read today's handout: Forrest Mims "Getting Started in Electronics".

 

3. Study the symbols for components, etc. I will hand out a short quiz for you to test your memory skills.

We will interpret schematics in class on September 10.

 

 

September 10, 2008

Assemble schematic handed out in class on breadboard. 

Bring assembled breadboard to class.

**Also bring laptop and Arduino kits to class.

 

Note: If you have not downloaded the Arduino software, please do so.

Follow the directions on the Arduino website.

You will need to install the driver for your USB cable.

This driver will be downloaded together with the Arduino software, in a folder labeled Drivers.

1. Bring three project ideas to class for Black Hole Space. During class time we will select a few project ideas and submit them as proposals to Terri Smith, the curator of Black Hole Space. Terri has informed me that you can write her with questions.

 

2. Solder a circuit onto a breadboard.

 

Note on Synaesthesia assignment: The Black Hole Space project takes the place of the previously assigned Synaesthesia assignment. If you have a project that you wish to share relating to synaesthesia, please bring it to class any time and we'll have a conversation about it as a class!

Proposal: Include at least one detailed drawing and or digital photos of a prototype, a written proposal describing the concept of your project, a list of the materials you will use to make it, a timeline for production, a site-specific location for the work along with an explanation (a site-specific location can be a particular location that provides a context for your artwork; a site-specific location can also be "anywhere"; explain why this location is significant to the artwork). Keep in mind that Terri has expressed an interest in "site-specific" work.

3. Reading Assignment: Marcin Ramocki, "The Militant Embrace of Technology" and scan through Radical Software pdfs. Both are downloadable on the Reading Assignments page.

 

4. FINAL PROJECT: For the final project, fulfill either Plan A or Plan B.

 

Plan A is an individual project: Make a 'stand-alone' or 'interactive' artwork that integrates electronic components. Present your project in class on December 17. Install your artwork for presentation prior to class. If you need a shelf, make a shelf and screw it to a wall. If you need to hang from the ceiling, hang your artwork from the ceiling. Heavy gauge fishing line (monofilament) or wire should work, depending on the weight of your project. Emphasis is on doing so prior to class. 

 

Plan B is a response project: Consider the view points of our guest artists, and those of the artists, activists, inventors, and writers we have discussed in class. They have questioned, imagined, anticipated, and influenced the role of wo/manmade technologies in society. Consider the impact of technologies and technological initiatives on the human condition, on our relationship to the Earth and to other species, on our perception of nature, on human behavior and the built environment. Think about your life, your relationships, and your world view. How do the conditions of our times influence your relationship or attitude toward technological trends? As an individual? As an artist? What defines our time? Where are we heading? Do you envision a role for yourself influencing the direction of technology in society today? You do not need to respond to all of these queries.

Make a response to one or many of these queries in the form of a drawing, a diagram or map, a proposal or a manifesto, a mythology, a rant or rave, a strategy, a plan for a social or technological machine, a transcript for a spoken word message that you have left on a voicemail system...  Surprise me! Due in class on December 17.
